Abstract
This paper presents an analytical and critical study of the scholarly corrections (taqabbāt) issued by the Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī (d. 852 AH) against Imām al-Ḥākim al-Naysābūrī (d. 405 AH) within the scope of the musnad of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may God be pleased with him) from the Mustadrak ʿalā al-Ṣaḥīḥayn, as documented by Ibn Ḥajar in his encyclopaedic work Itḥāf al-Mahra bi-al-Fawāʾid al-Mubtakara min Aṭrāf al-ʿAshara. The research addresses the central question of the nature and methodological foundations of these corrections, seeking to illuminate the mechanisms of critical scholarly dialogue between two eminent imams one representing the era of collection and compilation, and the other the era of verification and scrutiny. The study adopts an inductive-analytical methodology supplemented by a comparative approach for cross-referencing scholarly opinions. The applied analysis of four sample corrections yields several significant findings: Ibn Ḥajar's corrections fall into three distinct categories isnād discontinuity (inqiṭāʿ), narrator weakness (ḍaʿf al-ruwāt), and positive documentary corrections noting that a ḥadīth appears in one or both of the two Ṣaḥīḥs.
