The Methodology of the Yazid ibn Ruman to Tafsir through the Reasons for Revelation: An Applied Study

Abstract

This study provides an introduction to the Yazid ibn Ruman (may Allah have mercy on him), covering his name, lineage, and scholarly standing, and demonstrates. He was among the most reliable scholars and reciters of Medina. In this study, the concept of the reasons for revelation (asbab al-nuzul) is explained, outlining the most important definitions offered by scholars in this field. We then conducted an applied study of Yazid ibn Roman's narrations in Tafsir regarding the causes of revelation, by presenting his statements regarding a number of Qur'anic verses and citing the exegetes' comments on them. Thereafter, we weighed the various statements and identified which of them could be reconciled.
