Behavior of Square Reinforced Concrete Columns Wrapped with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Sheets Under Static and Dynamic Loading
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article provides a detailed numerical study of reinforced concrete columns wrapped with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer sheets (CFRP) using the Finite Element Method (FEM) by ANSYS APDL (Ansys Parametric Design Language). This study aims to investigate nonlinear structural behavior, including maximum displacements under maximum axial loading, maximum axial stress, and maximum axial plastic strain. Both static and harmonic analyses were conducted. A multilinear isotropic hardening model (MISO) is utilized for concrete and a bilinear isotropic hardening model for the steel rebars to model the material nonlinearity. Rebars beams elements join with concrete at the nodes between them. Axial force is applied at the top center of the column. Results reveal the extent of enhancement of elastic strain, stress, and axial load capacity of the column studied. The maximum load of the 4-sided wrapped column was 1.34 times that of the RC columns. The confinement pressure was greater in the concrete core of wrapped columns with CFRP sheets. During the application of harmonic loading, a considerable reduction in stresses was noticed due to wrapping. The results of this article emphasize that a more detailed FEM analysis of CFRP-wrapped RC columns is highly essential in the process of warranting performance-based design and retrofitting techniques.
