Investigating Hydatid Diseases Cases in Mosul Hospitals

Abstract

This study aims to assess the prevalence of hydatid cysts disease in Mosul hospitals. Methods: The study was conducted during the period from 2024 to 2025, in Department of surgery, in Mosul hospitals, on fifty patients those diagnosed to have hydatid disease with age ranging from 4 to 80 years. Result: the most prevalence in the age group of 1-10 years 22% followed by the 21-30 years while the lowest prevalence was in 71-80 years 6%. The infection percentage in males 52% was higher than that in females 48%. The liver was the most targeted organ 76% of the completely diagnosed cysts. Regarding cyst distribution 78% of patients had a single cyst, while 22% had multiple cysts, with significant different between two groups at P≤0.006. Concerning the rout of diagnosis, 39% of the hydatid cysts were detected accidentally, while 34 % were diagnosed after the onset of pain and 17 (27%) cysts were diagnosed due to complications.


Conclusions: Hydatid Cyst disease is widely spread in Mosul city with the most affected aged is ranged from 1- 30 years. The liver is the most frequently involved. Moreover, males show slightly higher infection rates as well as, infection percentage in males than females.
