Authorship

Authorship is limited to people who meet every criterion below. Peninsula Publishing Press applies the authorship criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the related guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Authorship criteria

A person is an author only if all four conditions are met:

  1. They made a substantial contribution to the conception or design of the work, or to the acquisition, analysis or interpretation of the data.
  2. They drafted the manuscript or revised it critically for important intellectual content.
  3. They approved the final version to be published.
  4. They agree to be accountable for all parts of the work, and to answer questions about the accuracy or integrity of any part of it.

Every article carries a contribution statement using the CRediT taxonomy, so that each author’s role is visible. Examples include Conceptualization, Methodology, Software, Formal analysis, Investigation, Writing – original draft, and Writing – review and editing.

Corresponding author

One author handles correspondence with the journal during submission, review and after publication. That author confirms that every co-author has seen and approved the manuscript and agrees to its submission. The corresponding author’s name, institutional email and ORCID iD are given on the manuscript. Authors are asked to keep their ORCID record current.

Each author’s affiliation is the institution where the main part of the work was done, stated as department, institution, city and country. If an author has since moved, the later institution may be given as a present affiliation. It does not replace the affiliation where the work was carried out.

Contributors who are not authors

Funding acquisition, general supervision of a group, administrative support, technical help, language editing and proofreading do not, by themselves, qualify a person for authorship. Those contributors are named in the Acknowledgements, with their permission.

Changes to the author list

The author list and its order should be settled before submission. After submission, an addition, removal or reordering is considered only if the corresponding author sends the Editor-in-Chief a written reason and written agreement from every author, including anyone being added or removed. Publication is paused while the request is considered. After publication, a change is made only through a formal correction. COPE’s guidance on authorship disputes is followed: COPE flowcharts.

Ghost, guest and gift authorship

Ghost, guest and gift authorship are not allowed. Anyone who meets the four criteria must be listed. Anyone who does not meet them must not be listed, including a person listed only because of their position. The journal does not decide who deserves authorship. Disputes are referred to the authors’ institutions, and publication may be paused until they are resolved.

Authorship and generative AI

A generative AI tool cannot be an author. It cannot take responsibility for the work, declare competing interests, or manage copyright. Use of such tools must be disclosed as set out on the Generative AI page. All human authors remain responsible for the whole manuscript.
